FinTech North Skills Initiative Launch

This year at FinTech North, we aim to spread our activity across three pillars, our usual events programme, international activity and skills initiatives.

It is no secret that there is a demand for skills in the sector, and we know first-hand from the amount of engagement we receive at our events that students, young people, and individuals pursuing career changes are interested in FinTech, but don’t know where to start. Equally, employers face challenge such as applicants lacking skills and experience, or individuals predominantly aspiring to join larger firms.

We aim to address this disparity in 2024, with a skills initiative that bridges the gap between the employer demand and the talent supply within the sector. We have produced a graphic entailing our what we believe are the needs within the sector and goals we want to achieve to make this idea a reality.

At the heart of this initiative lies a concerted effort to cultivate collaboration between FinTech enterprises and academic institutions. We are actively fostering partnerships with universities to ensure that academic opportunities are closely aligned with the ever-evolving requirements of the FinTech industry.

Our approach involves extensive engagement with a diverse array of stakeholders, ranging from universities and educational providers to corporate entities, FinTech start-ups, financial institutions, and technology consultancies. Through a multifaceted approach comprising skills-focused events, steering groups, seminars, webinars, roundtable discussions, panel sessions conferences, and hackathons, we aim to create a robust platform for knowledge exchange and skills development. Additionally, we are committed to disseminating skills-focused content via our website, thereby enhancing accessibility and outreach.

Central to our mission is the enhancement of engagement with students and individuals at the early stages of their FinTech careers, as well as those seeking to transition into FinTech roles through re-skilling initiatives.

So far we have hosted a Career Booster Webinar with the University of Bradford, secured our first skills partnership and formed a skills steering group, which had its inaugural meeting earlier this week. This certainly feels like the beginning of a brilliant journey for skills in FinTech.

To facilitate collaboration between academic organisations and FinTech enterprises, we have curated a comprehensive skills package.

We look forward to embarking on this journey of skill development and industry collaboration together.
